Paul Sinks Bautista-Agut’s Chances

World number 35 Paul continued his march towards a possible semifinal and a potential place in the top 25 of the ATP Rankings when he downed experienced Spaniard Bautista-Agut in their fourth round encounter.

Paul won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in three hours and 22 minutes, warding off Bautista-Agut’s stern fight. Where the American found his edge was his play on crucial points which meant he was able to fight off all but two of the break-points he faced.

The two that he did lose came in the second set and that saw Bautista-Agut level things out. Paul retaliated with two breaks of serves in the third set, following the pattern of the opening set and then held on till the 11th game in the fourth set before breaking his opponent one final time.

Interestingly, Paul admitted he needed to do a lot of running in the second half of the match and that’s something he would look to recover from come his quarterfinal.

The good news for Paul is his opponent in this upcoming encounter was also stretched to five sets and that levels things up.

Shelton Outfoxes Wolf

Shelton is all of 20 years of age, playing in just his second major and never been ranked better than 89th in the world before this tournament. And yet, when he takes to a tennis court the next time, he will be featuring in a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Having failed to make it past the qualifiers at the Adelaide International and then getting knocked out in the second round at Auckland, Shelton has ridden his luck – especially from his draw where he is yet to play a seeded opponent – and made it to the last eight.

And the American got there with a hard-fought five-set win over the slightly more experienced countryman JJ Wolf.

There wasn’t much to choose between those two players coming into their fourth round match and that showed in the entire match. Wolf went ahead with a tie-breaker win in the first set, and then took a 2-1 lead in another tie-breaker in the third set.

Shelton, who was never broken in the entire match, levelled things out in the fourth set tie-breaker but then took firm control of the encounter with two more breaks of serves in the decider.

What was a sight to behold was Shelton’s first serve of which he won 82% of the points over a five-set period.

Win or lose here, Shelton would have already broken into the top 50 when the new rankings are released come the next week. Can he stretch his run at the Happy Slam a little further here though?

Paul v Shelton Prediction and Tips

Paul is a favourite here but Shelton has shown enough to suggest he will be anything but a pushover in this encounter. Expect a Paul win but with both players to win a set in it.
