Aryna Sabalenka v Donna Vekic Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry. On paper you would think Sabalenka would have swamped Vekic in most of their previous meetings but across different circuits and levels of competitions these two have met six times and Vekic leads 5-1!

The last of these outings came in San Diego last season and Vekic had won that quarterfinal in three sets. Two of these six matches came in the qualifiers of WTA events and one on the ITF circuit and all of those were won by Vekic too.

Sabalenka Bundles Bencic Out

Sabalenka’s form is looking scarier as the tournament has gone along and in the fourth round it was the turn of Belinda Bencic to face her wrath.

In a match lasting less than an hour and a half, Sabalenka sent Bencic packing in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-2 to make it to her first ever Australian Open quarterfinal. In doing so, Sabalenka also recorded her eighth win in a row for this season after having started the year out with a title win in Adelaide.

It wasn’t like Sabalenka started off well; far from it in fact. She was broken in the third game and fell behind 2-4 at one stage.

The Belarusian got herself a score-levelling break in the eighth game and from there on took control of the encounter. Bencic was broken when she served to stay in the opening set and then again in the fourth game of the second set.

And for the second time in the match, just as the Swiss number one served to stay in the set – and the match too – Sabalenka broke her for the second time to ease through to the quarterfinal.

Sabalenka is yet to lose a set this season and it would be interesting to see if she can maintain that record against a player who has had the better of their exchanges.

Vekic Quells Teenage Sensation

While Vekic had gone into her fourth round match against the 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova as a 2/5 favourite to win it, there were enough experts who were backing the latter to pull up a surprise here.

And she nearly did as the Czech player pushed the match into a third set before Vekic re-discovered her control and won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to march into her maiden quarterfinal at this tournament.

In a match lasting two hours and nine minutes, both players got themselves two more breaks than their opponent in the first two sets to set up a potentially delicious decider. Fruhvirtova kick-started the third set with break of serve that put her 2-1 in front only to drop her own serve in the very next game.

Vekic then broke again in the eighth game and this time around she converted the first match she got to make the last eight.

Interestingly, like Sabalenka, Vekic is also unbeaten in the season so far and that includes two victories at the Kooyong exhibition competition. Beating Sabalenka, however, will be a onerous task.

Sabalenka v Vekic Prediction and Tips

Sabalenka hasn’t dropped a set all season while Vekic is coming off a brilliant few wins in 2023. The sheer power and returning capabilities of Sabalenka make her a heavy favourite here.
