Djokovic Routs Rublev in Quarterfinal
Djokovic has said to have had his fitness concerns but by the looks of how he’s gone about his business in his previous two rounds, those look to have disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.
The former world number one set about his business of making it to the semifinal in what could have been a tricky encounter against Andrey Rublev and did that in as much an ease as one can expect a world number five to be in against the world number six.
In a match lasting a mere two hours and five minutes, Djokovic carved out a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win over Rublev with the Serb not getting broken even once in the encounter. Djokovic, who last lost a match in this tournament in 2018, took that step closer to his 22nd Grand Slam win as he went after his opponent’s forehand and second serves.
Such was his dominance over the latter that Rublev won just 32% of his second serve but making it worse was the fact he didn’t have a great record on his first serves either. Djokovic also hit 14 aces and 32 winners to upend Rublev’s six aces and 26 winners, not to mention 29 unforced errors.
Having also crushed Alex de Minaur in the previous round, Djokovic looks like he has a straightforward route to the title-decider.

Paul Ends Shelton’s Fairy Tale
In one way, Paul did end his opponent, Ben Shelton’s excellent but stunning run. The other way of looking at this is Paul has extended his own fairy-tale story which had never seen him make it past the fourth round at any major and the third round at this tournament.
Here, in defeating Shelton in the quarterfinals, Paul has entered his first major semis and will break into the top 20 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his career irrespective of what happens in this match.
And it wasn’t easy for Paul either, with the American needing three hours and eight minutes to come through in four sets. Paul won 7-6 (6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 against his fellow countryman.
Enduring 24 aces and 42 aces from Shelton, Paul helped his own cause by sending down only 26 unforced errors over those four sets. Other than a stunning comeback from Shelton in the third set where he was a break down after having lost the first two sets, Paul seemed like he was in control of the encounter through most part of it.
This win followed victories over Jan-Lennard Struff, Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, Jenson Brooksby and Roberto Bautista-Agut in his previous rounds.
Against Djokovic, however, it could well be a case of how much time can Paul keep his opponent on court for.
Djokovic v Paul Prediction and Tips
At 1/17 favourite to win this, those would represent one of the shortest odds in a Grand Slam semifinal and that is as much to do with the surprise entry of Paul as it is to do with Djokovic’s superlative form. It would be no surprise if we see a similar scoreline as we have in the previous two of Djokovic’s wins.
