Potapova Scrapes Past Bassols Ribera

Ranked 124th in the world, Marina Bassols Ribera was never expected to put up any kind of a fight against Potapova but that’s exactly how their opening round encounter turned out to be.

Potapova, who had struggled to notch up a win this season before this, needed two hours and 15 minutes and the loss of the opening set to seal her second win of the year.

Having made the second round at Australian Open following early defeats at the two Adelaide tournaments, Potapova conjured up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Bassols Ribera in the opener here.

She was broken twice in the first set and once apiece in the following two but once Potapova had a grasp of the proceedings from the second set onward, she did not face too many difficulties in the rest of the encounter.

Can she now win two in two for the first time this season, having ended the last year with a semifinal berth at the Cluj-Napoca Open?

Burel Inching Back into the Top 100

Having hit a career-high ranking of 74th on the WTA charts last season, Burel’s form hit bit of a roadblock and her ranking plummetted as a result of that.

Burel slipped to 137th in 2022 before ending the season ranked 122nd in the world, forcing her to feature in the qualifiers at the Australian Open. She did a good job of that though.

Having not played in any of the tune-up tournaments before the start of the first major, Burel registered fighting wins in two of the three qualifying rounds at Australian Open. She then made the second round there for the first time in her career.

Coming off that showing there, Burel then stunned Ana Bogdan in the opener here, winning 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 51 minutes. In a topsy-turvy affair, Burel fell 3-1 behind in the first set and then had a chance to serve it out at 5-4 where she missed three set-points before finally winning it in the 12th game.

In the second set, she got a break in the fifth game, only to lose her serve in the eighth. Another break followed in the very next game before Burel carved out a win off her first match-point.

Can she give Potapova a run for her money here now?

Potapova v Burel Prediction and Tip

Potapova is 1/3 to win this but Burel’s form deserves much better odds than the 12/5 for her win. This could be a risky punt but we think 12/5 is a good offer for her victory here.
