Parks Takes Down Another Seed

Alycia Parks took down seventh seed Danka Kovinić in straight sets on Friday to reach a maiden WTA 250 semifinal.

The American, who won back-to-back WTA 125 titles in Andorra and Angers in December, is 14-1 from her last 15 matches. This is her first main draw appearance of the season and the 22-year-old has already had an impact.

Parks, who needed three sets to win both her opening two rounds, defeated the Montenegrin 7-5, 6-2 in just an hour and 25 minutes.

It was Kovinic who was the first to break in the opening set to build a 3-5 lead, but she could not close out the set as Parks bounced back to win four games in a row and seal the first set.

With the opening set in the bag, the world no. 79 dominated the second to break Kovinic twice and soar into the semifinals. Parks converted 4 of 5 break points in the match and saved one of two that she faced. She hit 5 aces on Friday and has struck a total of 20 aces so far in the tournament.

Parks had begun her campaign by beating Julia Grabher 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the first round; and then she came back from a set down to beat the fourth seed Petra Martic 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the round of 16.

Zanevska Rallies Past Potapova

Maryna Zanevska is closing in on a second WTA title.

The 2021 Poland Open champion, who knocked out the defending champion and second seed Zhang Shuai in the round of 16 on Thursday, rebounded from a set down to beat Anastasia Potapova in a quarterfinal match on Friday.

The world no. 93 came back from a break down twice in the opening set, but a third break from the Potapova proved to be decisive as the Russian took a one-set-to-love lead.

The 29-year-old Belgian made a remarkable recovery in the second set, breaking her opponent twice and finishing the set by winning the last five games in a row.

With the match tied at one-set all, the third set began with two consecutive breaks of serve but Potapova couldn’t match Zanevska for the rest of the set as the latter finished the final set the way she finished the second, by winning five games in a row.

Zanevska faced a staggering 22 break points in the match, but she saved 18 of them. She herself had 18 opportunities to break the world no. 43’s serve and she captalised on seven of those chances.

Zanevska, who made it to the Round of 16 in Hobart after coming through the qualifiers, lost out in the opening round of the Australian Open. But she has looked in solid form in Lyon, knocking out Dalma Gálfi 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in the opening round and then handing Zhang a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing in round 2.

Can she keep her surprise run going?

Parks v Zanevska Prediction and Tip

It’s an unexpected semifinal between two players who have shown tremendous form over the week. Parks has been in top form since the end of November and even though Zanevska is the more experienced player, she may struggle to beat the American.
