By this time last year, Maxime Cressy had featured in his maiden ATP final, reached another quarterfinal and also made his fourth round debut at a Grand Slam. This year, the 25-year-old is not even close to that start. He has played in two tournaments and brings a 1-2 season record to Montpellier.
Cressy lost to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round in Adelaide, but got off to a winning start at the Australian Open, with a win over Albert Ramos Vinolas. He couldn’t go beyond the second round though as he was stopped by Holger Rune. Now, Cressy will look to start well in Montpellier to give some impetus to the new season.
He had begun the year as the world no. 34, but has fallen 17 places since then. A decent showing in Montpellier could help him regain a few places in the rankings and that would be one of his aims as he takes on Antoine Bellier in the first round.
2022 was a breakthrough year for Cressy. He won his maiden title in Newport and finished runners-up in Melbourne Summer- Set 1 and Eastbourne.
Although there were phases when he got out early in the first round, but he still had a huge impact last year, thanks to which he not only broke into the top 100 but also reached a career-high ranking of 31 in August. He has a disappointing finish to the season though, but he will like to put that behind and start afresh in Montpellier.

Bellier Rallies Past Gakhov
Antoine Bellier saved two match points before beating Ivan Gakhov in the second qualifying round on Monday to reach his first tour-level main draw in 2023.
The Swiss, ranked no. 190, had lost the opening set against the Russian and then faced two match points in the second set tiebreak, but he saved both of them and then got the solitary break of the third to win the match 3-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.
Bellier had beaten France’s Manuel Guinard 6-4, 7-6 in the first qualifying round on Sunday.
The 26-year-old lefty has mostly featured in Challenger and qualifying rounds this year and is 4-4 from all those matches. He had reached his maiden tour-level semifinal at the ATP 250 in Mallorca last year. Then ranked 303, he was a surprise semifinalist and that run helped him rise in the rankings.
He also played in two ITF finals last year, winning one on clay.
