Maria Sakkari v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Sakkari leads 1-0, last beating Zheng in the 2022 Australian Open round of 64 by 6-1, 6-4.

Sakkari is in Good Form

Competing in the Linz Open last week, World No. 7 Maria Sakkari made it to the semifinals after dismissing Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, Varvara Gracheva, and Donna Vekic in straight sets. Two of those three matches saw a thrilling tie-break where the Greek defended her solid momentum to keep marching.

In the semis, she played the sixth seed Petra Martic and lost 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.

That was her first tournament since the Australian Open, where she was stunned by Lin Zhu in the third round in three sets. However, before that shock, the 27-year-old did reach the semifinal in the United Cup.

Sakkari has won eight matches and lost three in 2023, suggesting that she is likely to perform well in Doha. She has been gradually improving her performance in the competition over the years, having reached the semifinal in the 2022 edition.

Zheng Ready to Leave her Mark

World No. 29 Qinwen Zheng is coming off a superb week in Abu Dhabi. The unseeded star registered a handful of big wins against the elites like Jelena Ostapenko (7-6(10), 6-1) and Daria Kasatkina (6-1, 6-2). In these two matches, she dished out 14 aces and kept her first-service win rate over 70%.

In the opening match, the 20-year-old dismissed the Canadian veteran Rebecca Marino 6-3, 6-3 – courtesy of 10 aces and a remarkable service game.

Zheng ultimately lost to Liudmila Samsonova 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, but not before producing 15 aces and testing the Russian thoroughly. This streak in Abu Dhabi is Zheng’s best season result, with her other highlights being round-two showings in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Qinwen burst onto the tennis scene in 2022 after starting the season ranked outside the top 120 and finishing within the top 30. She had a 39-19 record and made it to the mid-rounds of three out of the four major tournaments. Additionally, she won two titles on the ITF and Challenger circuits.

Sakkari v Zheng Prediction and Tip

This is going to be an explosive match. Sakkari is the odds-on favourite owing to her experience, but Zheng’s impeccable service is well-positioned to match Maria’s aggressive play. In fact, to win at 4/5, backing Qinwen may not be the worst move to make here.
