Gael Monfils v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

The only previous encounter between Monfils and Berankis had happened in Bucharest in 2014 and the Frenchman had won it in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Monfils Keeps Winning

A Rotterdam Open title win in which Monfils defeated David Goffin, Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka – the last of them in the final – makes Monfils a serious contender heading into this early part of the season.

Sure, the first of those aforementioned names aren’t yet as consistent as they can be and Wawrinka has had an injury-filled past few months but for the Frenchman to have won the title defeating all of them cannot be understated.

And it’s not like those wins were flukes, proved so in the first round of this tournament against Marin Cilic, the third seed. Monfils exchanged the first two sets with Cilic before delivering a bagel in the final set to make it to the second round.

Marcos Baghdatis was sent packing after that, with Monfils winning 6-3, 6-2 and there cannot be too much doubt that an unseeded opponent like Berankis, shouldn’t cause too many problems to the Frenchman.

…but Berankis has the Confidence

Now let’s be fair, Berankis hasn’t had the easiest times in 2019, spending most of his time playing in Challengers and qualifiers of ATP tournaments.

A round of 16 spot in Doha was followed by a loss in the Australian Open qualifiers, a title win at the Rennes Challenger and then another qualifiers defeat in Montpellier.

He was also a finalist at the Quimper Challenger before losing to Nicholas Mahut in the first round of the OpenSude de France qualifiers, so when Berankis started off his journey in Dubai, his chances did not sound very encouraging.

However, two wins during the qualifiers before a shock victory against eighth seeded Daniil Medvedev put him against Denis Kudla in round two. And a 6-4, 6-1 drubbing in that match ensures there will be some sort of positiveness from him going into this encounter.

Gael Monfils v Ricardas Berankis Predictions & Tips

While Monfils is 1/5 (Betfair) to win this while Berankis starts a rank outsider at 5/1 (Unibet), the market worth looking at is the number of sets in the match. A fighting three-setter could be in the offing give Monfils’ slight unpredictability and Berankis’ form.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 15/8 (Betway)
