Danielle Collins v Elise Mertens Head to Head
Collins leads 2-1 head to head. Mertens won at Wimbledon in 2018, but Collins won the next two in Chicago in 2021 and at the Australian Open last year.

Collins Sliding Down the Rankings
After suffering a tough three-set loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the first round in Abu Dhabi last week, Danielle Collins will be looking to put that setback behind her and start well on her Doha debut.
Collins is 4-4 this season. She had lost her season opener in Adelaide to Elena Rybakina. But found some form in Adelaide-2, defeating Karoline Pliskova and Jil Teichmann in the first two rounds, before losing in the last eight stage to Veronika Kudermetova.
A finalist at the Australian Open in 2022, she exited the tournament in the first week this year. However, she did win her first two rounds against Anna Kalinskaya and Karolina Muchova, but was stopped from progressing into the fourth round by Rybakina. All three of Collins’ matches in the first major were three set affairs.
Another interesting fact: All the four matches that she has lost this year, including the one against Ostapenko last week, were decided in the final set.
So Collins has been in decent touch, just that she hasn’t been winning consistently.
A two-time champion on the tour, the American had reached a career-high ranking of no. 7 last year. She began 2023 at no. 14, but has fallen 28 places since then. She will be hoping to put up a good showing in Doha to begin her climb back up.

Mertens Comes Through Qualifiers
Over the last two days, Elise Mertens won back-to-back three set matches to reach the main draw at the Qatar Open.
The Belgian, who had double bagelled Murbaka Al Naemi in the first qualifying round, defeated Magdalena Fręch 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in the second qualifying round on Sunday and Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second qualifying round to reach the main draw.
A former world no. 12, Mertens is a seven-time champion on the tour from 11 finals. One of those titles came in Doha as she defeated Simona Halep in the final in 2019.
Currently ranked no. 37th in the world, Mertens has played in four tournaments this year and brings a 4-4 record into the tournament. She had a 1-1 record at the United Cup, then lost her opener in Hobart, but reached the third round of the Australian Open, before winning one and losing one in Abu Dhabi.
Last year she had lost in the third round to eventual finalist Annett Kontaveit. How far will she go this year?
Collins v Mertens Prediction and Tip
Mertens has shown great form over the last three days and therefore the momentum is with her. Collins is on a two-match losing streak. Their last meeting was a close three-set contest at the Australian Open Round of 16 in 2022. So expect this one to be close as well, with Mertens edging through.
