Belinda Bencic v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

Bencic is 2-0. Her first win over Tomova came at a lower level in 2013. Her second came in the first round of the Australian Open this year. In both the matches, the Swiss was the dominant player allowing the Bulgarian to win just three games in each of them.

Bencic Is 12-2 In 2023

World no. 9 Belinda Bencic is off to a flying start in 2023. It’s been barely a month since the season kicked off and the 25-year-old has already won two titles.

She won her first title of the year by defeating Daria Kasatkina in the final of Adelaide-2 and won her second last week in Abu Dhabi, when she ousted another Russian, Liudmilla Samsonova, in the final.

With the two titles, she has now won eight titles from 17 WTA finals.

Last year, she had won just one title and finished runner-up once. This year, she has already won two and will be hungry for more. She brings a 12-2 record into the tournament. In addition to the two titles, she also made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open for just the second time in her career and was 1-1 from her two United Cup matches.

The Swiss player was a quarterfinalist in Doha in 2020, but lost in the opening rounds over the last two years. She is in red-hot form at the moment and it is highly unlikely that she will be going out that early this year.

Tomova Qualifies for the Main Draw

Her first two opponents in the qualifying rounds were forced to retired during the match, but Viktoriya Tomova earned a place in the main draw with a convincing win over Madison Brengle in the final qualifying round on Monday.

Tomova saved 4 of 6 break points and converted 5 of 13 to beat the American 6-3, 6-3 and sail into the main draw in Doha for the first time in her career.

The world no. 100 Tomova was leading Maryna Zanevska 7-5, when the latter retired from the first qualifying round. In the next match, the Bulgarian was leading Lauren Davis 3-6, 7-6, 2-1 when the American retired from the contest.

Tomova is 5-4 from all her matches this year, but all five wins have come in qualifying rounds. Two of those wins came in Linz and three in Doha. At the tour-level, she lost her only match at the United Cup and made first round exits from the Australian Open and the Linz Open. She also lost her first qualifying round match in Lyon.

Can she pull off a massive upset in the first round and get her first main draw win of the season? Seems unlikely.

Bencic v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Bencic is in excellent form; she is also the more experienced of the two; has a better record against the Bulgarian and is also a superior player. Expect her to win with ease.
