Bencic Trounces Tomova
World no. 9 Belinda Bencic stormed into the second round of the Qatar Open with a straight sets thrashing of qualifier Viktoriya Tomova on Tuesday.
The Swiss, who has come into the tournament on the back of a title success in Abu Dhabi last week, extended her unbeaten streak to five matches as she demolished the Bulgarian 6-0, 6-1 in just 58 minutes.
Bencic saved all three of the break points that she faced in the match and converted 5 of 9. She won 75% points on the back of her first serve during a dominant performance.
The win improved the Swiss to 13-2 this season. An eight-time champion on the tour from 17 finals, Bencic has already clinched two titles this year. She won the first in Adelaide-2, by beating Daria Kasatkina in the final and won her second of the season in Abu Dhabi by defeating Liudmilla Samsonova in the summit clash.
The 25-year-old, who had made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open is aiming to reach the last eight in Qatar for the second time. She had reached that stage in 2020, but is yet to go further in the tournament.

Azarenka Breezes Past Oz
Victoria Azarenka powered past Turkey’s İpek Öz in the first round on Monday.
The Belarusian, who is playing for the first time since her semifinal exit at the Australian Open, broke the world no. 196 twice in the first set and four times in the second, while getting broken once during a 6-1, 6-1 victory in an hour and five minutes.
The world no. 17 won 79% points on her first serve and also won 665 return points in the match.
Following the victory, she has improved to 8-3 in 2023. She was a quarterfinalist in Adelaide-1, lost the opener in Adelaide-2, but produced some top quality tennis in the first major of the year, reaching the semifinals for the first time since winning her second Australian Open title in 2013.
Her bid to win a third time in Melbourne ended with a straight sets defeat to Elena Rybakina.
The 21-time Tour-level champion has an excellent record in Qatar. She won the titles in 2012 and 2013, was a finalist in 2015 and made it to the final four in 2021. Can she stop the red-hot Bencic and keep her chances of another deep run alive?
