Shuai Zhang v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Zheng; coincidentally, they met right here in Dubai in 2021, where Qinwen prevailed 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4.

Zhang Coming off a Bleak Run

34-year-old Shuai Zhang is still going strong on the WTA Tour. Even though she hasn’t picked up that many singles wins this season, her participation throughout has been pretty active.

Her best results came in the Australian Open where she reached the fourth round, beating Patricia Maria Tig, Petra Martic, and Katie Volynets. Before that, it was back-to-back opening-match defeats in Adelaide 1 and 2.

Since the major, Zhang’s form hasn’t improved as one would expect. She lost to Maryna Zanevska in straight sets in round two of the Lyon Open, followed by first-round exits in Abu Dhabi and Doha – respectively, to Anett Kontaveit and Petra Kvitova.

On the doubles side of things, Shuai picked up her 13th career title in Abu Dhabi – this one with Luisa Stefani.

Qinwen Poised to Rise

At just 20 years old, Qinwen Zheng is set to become the Chinese No. 1 – it seems to be a matter of time more than anything. In fact, she is the current World No. 24 – ranking just two places below Zhang.

Her heroics include round two appearances in Adelaide events and the Australian Open. In Abu Dhabi, she delivered the best run of the year so far by reaching the semis – dispatching Rebecca Marino, Jelena Ostapenko, and Daria Kasatkina.

Most recently, she played in the Qatar Open, where she fell to Maria Sakkari in the opener – 2-6, 6-3, 3-6.

Boasting a big service game and a superb 2022 season which she closed at 39-19, Zheng is undoubtedly a formidable adversary.

Zheng v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Qinwen has the advantage of youth, powerful serve, and grit. Zhang, as a doubles expert, can tap into her massive experience, but it is hard to imagine her surviving the barrage of aces and big strokes.
