Having reached a career-high ranking of 17th in the world thanks to her two title wins last season, Alexandrova hasn’t had the best of starts to this new year.
While, on the one hand, one might say a 4-4 win-loss record isn’t the poorest, the other aspect is she has a lot of points to defend in the coming months and a good few results to kick-start the year might have helped immensely.
Because it was in the second half of the year in 2022 that Alexandrova had won a couple of WTA titles along with her semifinal appearance at both, the Charleston Open and Madrid Open in April and May.
She began the year with an opening loss at the Adelaide International and then withdrew from her second round match at the Adelaide International 2 because of injury.
A third round at the Australian Open followed soon after but just one win from the next three matches makes it imperative for her to get herself a solid result soon enough. The only good news is Alexandrova did rout Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-2 in the first round in Doha last week, a win that should give her some confidence.

Rogers Makes Abu Dhabi Quarterfinal
A week into the season, Rogers had fallen to 53rd in the world but will enter this tournament ranked 45th and with a confidence-boosting quarterfinal at the Abu Dhabi Open going her way.
Having made it to the main draw of the Abu Dhabi Open as a qualifier, Rogers needed three sets against both, Leylah Fernandez and Anett Kontaveit to make it to the last eight. And even there, it was the pedigree of Belinda Bencic who took her out.
Coming into this tournament, Rogers will know she had made the second round here in 2021 with a surprise win over Kaia Kanepi. This time around it will need her to register a bigger surprise if she needs to carve out a similar performance.
