Victoria Azarenka v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings between these two with Azarenka having won five of them. Their last match-up came at the 2021 French Open where Pavlyuchenkova defeated Azarenka in the fourth round on her way to making it to the title-decider where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova.

Azarenka Doesn’t Last Too Long in Doha

A semifinalist at the Australian Open earlier this year, Azarenka’s return to the courts did not get her the kind of results she would have liked.

Her first appearance since that semifinal loss to Elena Rybakina came in Doha last week where Azarenka started off with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Ipek Oz in the first round. However, in the second, Azarenka would be rather disappointed with her three-set loss to Belinda Bencic.

More so because after winning the first set 6-1, Azarenka looked like she had her chances in the remaining two but couldn’t convert the chances she did have.

Azarenka will now hope to turn that around as she would hope to better her performance from the previous season here in Dubai when she had lost in the first round. She should be confident going into her match against a player who hasn’t won a main draw encounter since last year’s Australian Open.

Pavlyuchenkova Desperate for Success

After having spent most of the 2022 season on the sidelines because of a knee injury, Pavlyuchenkova has begun the new year rather gingerly as she looks to find her footing.

Pavlyuchenkova has played in three tournaments so far – the Adelaide International, the Australian Open and the Linz Open – and has won just one qualifying round from those.

In fact her 6-0, 6-1 loss to Camila Giorgi at the Australian Open would have stung her hard given she wasn’t too much behind her opponent according to the bookmakers, starting out a mere 11/10 underdog in the encounter.

She defeated Viktoria Kuzmova in the first Linz qualifier only to go down Viktoriya Tomova in the second. And now she has enters this tournament on a Protected Ranking but has been drawn to play an opponent who has enough pedigree to send her packing.

The question is if Pavlyuchenkova can show some wherewithal and push Azarenka into the third.

Azarenka v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Azarenka, if fully fit, should have no issues in getting past Pavlyuchenkova and that can be seen from the odds here as well. Azarenka is a whopping 1/7 to win this and 1/2 to do so in straight sets. We think that Pavlyuchenkova will start getting more and more competitive as she gets some tennis miles under her belt but for now, Azarenka looks set to win in this in two.
