Christopher O’Connell v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

O’Connell and Verdasco have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

O’Connell Yet to Win a Top Level Main Draw Match in 2023

After having the kind of season O’Connell had last year, his start to 2023 has been something of a damp squib. So good was O’Connell on the Challenger circuit that he rose from 175th in the world in 2022 to finish off the season ranked 78th.

That was his career-best ranking.

This year, however, O’Connell hasn’t done anything of note at the highest level. A first round defeat at the Adelaide International was followed by O’Connell needing to make it through the qualifiers of the Adelaide International 2 to make the main draw.

And there again, O’Connell fell in the first round.

Jenson Brooksby sent him packing in the opening round of the Australian Open before O’Connell opted to take part in the Manama Challenger last week. All he could do there was win a round before Jan-Lennard Struff got the better of him.

Can he now make use of a better draw in which he faces the equally struggling and 133rd-ranked opponent Verdasco.

Verdasco’s Not Won Main Draw Match Since September 2022

If O’Connell has struggled all season, Verdasco’s problems in main draws of competitions at the highest level have been around for a while.

In fact the last time he won a round on the ATP circuit was way back in September 2022, and even that had come after five months of trying.

This season, Verdasco has participated in three tournaments but hasn’t done too much of note. It started at the Australian Open where Verdasco did not even make the main draw and while he did that at Dallas, the Spaniard was blown away by Mackenzie McDonald in the first round there.

Featuring at the Delray Beach Open last week, Verdasco again did not win but he will be slightly pleased with his fighting effort. In the opener there, he took Radu Albot to two tie-breakers.

Can he now take advantage of O’Donnell’s struggles here?

O’Connell v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

O’Donnell has odds of 2/5 associated with his win while Verdasco is a distant 2/1 to win it. The Spaniard could, however, grab a set here.
