Sousa Struggling in 2023

Sousa has been the undisputed top ranked tennis player in Portugal for the best part of a decade, but he will not enjoy the fact that he is so lowly ranked at the moment.

After all, this is a man who was ranked as high as 28 in the world at one point, and who has won four major titles in his career, including in Pune last year. He was also a beaten finalist in the Geneva Open a few months later.

But he had a sustained losing run in the second half of last season, and he dropped many points in the process.

Nor were there many green shoots in the first weeks of 2023. He failed to qualify for Auckland and was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open.

Reaching the quarter-finals in Cordoba was a much needed morale booster, but he then was beaten in the first round in Buenos Aires, by the Peruvian, Juan Pablo Varillas,

Dellien Coming off Cordoba Semifinal

Dellien is the number one player in a country not known for producing many tennis stars.

Indeed, he became the first Bolivian to win a Grand Slam match for 35 years when he reached the second round of the French Open in 2018, a feat he has since emulated at two more Grand Slam events,

However, he may feel that he is in better form than his opponent, Sousa, although he too, was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open.

From there, he went to Chile to play in a Challenger tournament on clay, where he reached the semi-finals, and, having navigated qualifying in Cordoba, progressed to the semi-finals again, before losing in straight sets to the Argentine, Sebastian Baez.

He could not repeat his exploits in Buenos Aires, beaten in the first round by local man Tomas Martin Etcheverry, going down to a three sets defeat.

Sousa v Dellien Prediction and Tip

Based on current form, Dellien will consider himself favourite for this match. For Sousa, this might be a launchpad to begin a renaissance, but he will have to play a lot better than he has managed to do over the last six months or more.
