Musetti’s Stock Continues to Rise

Musetti first burst on the scene in 2021, when he became the youngest man to break into the top 100, reached an ATP 500 semi-final, and the fourth round of the French Open on his Grand Slam debut.

Off the court issues hampered his progress in the second half of that season, but, last year, he showed more signs of his talent by winning his first two ATP titles, both of clay: the Hamburg European Open, a prestigious ATP 500 event, and the Napoli Cup on home soil in Italy.

He ended the year by reaching the quarter-final of a Masters’ tournament for the first time in Paris, and ended the year ranked inside the top 25.

Since then his ranking has improved further, despite losing in the first round of the Australian Open.

In his first clay court event of the year in Buenos Aires last week he was beaten in the second round by the Peruvian world number 81, Juan Pablo Varillas.

Jarry Aiming to Recapture Past Glories

Arguably Jarry’s career has never fully recovered after he missed almost the entire 2020 season serving a suspension for doping violations after he was caught with performance enhancing drugs in his system.

Prior to that he had been a top 40 player, had appeared in three ATP finals, all of them on clay, winning in Bastad in 2019, and challenging Cristian Garin for the honour of being the top ranked player from Chile.

The first of those finals was the Brazil Open in 2018, when he was beaten by another Italian, Fabio Fognini.

It has been a long road back for Jarry, although he did win the doubles in a Challenger event last year.

There has been little to suggest he is ready to return to former glories this year, although to his credit, he not only came through qualifying to make the main draw of the Australian Open, but reached the second round before losing to the young American rising star, Ben Shelton.

Back on his favourite surface of clay, he lost in the first round of qualifying in Buenos Aires last week, but has enjoyed more success in Rio, earning his chance against Musetti by defeating two Argentines, Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Juan Manuel Cerundulo, both in straight sets,

Musetti v Jarry Prediction and Tip

Musetti will start the clear favourite for this match against the qualifier, who has yet to regain the levels he was at before his ban from the sport.
