Alexander Zverev v Andy Murray Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings at the highest level with Murray leading 2-1 on head to head. Their last match came at the 2021 Indian Wells Open where Zverev won in straight sets.

Zverev 3-5 This Season

He might have gotten himself a bye in the first round here but Zverev’s overall form this year coming back from his ankle injury has been underwhelming. Zverev will hope to improve as he grows into confidence on court but for now he has won just three of the eight matches he’s played this season.

What’s particularly interesting is the opponents against whom those defeats have come.

At the United Cup where he played for Germany, Zverev lost to Jiri Lehecka. Then at the season’s first Grand Slam, it was Michael Mmoh who took him down in four sets. There was a Davis Cup loss to Marc-Andrea Huesler.

More recently at the Rotterdam Open, Zverev also went down to Tallon Griekspoor. This was after he had grabbed the first set.

And in that lies the rub, Zverev unable to win matches against players ranked way lower than him. Sure he is still recovering from his fitness but that also means it’s an opportunity for someone like Andy Murray to take advantage of the situation.

Murray Stretched by Sonego

Returning to competitive tennis after the Australian Open, Murray did not have it easy in his first round in Doha. Facing up to the challenge of Lorenzo Sonego, Murray was stretched to three sets by the Italian before needing a deciding tie-breaker to come through for his win.

Murray was on court for more than two and a half hours to quell Sonego’s eight aces and 82% first serve points won to clinch his second round berth.

The Brit was broken once in the match which he came through after being a set down, winning 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). In a tense final set in which neither player player lost his serve, Murray was down three match-points off his own serve at 4-5 but came back to push it into a tie-breaker.

He then overturned a 0-3 deficit to win six successive points and very soon, the match to set up this meeting with Zverev.

Can he make it two in two?

Zverev v Murray Prediction and Tip

While Murray might have been a tad exhausted by the three-setter, he is also fortunate to have had a day to recover between the two rounds. We think he has a gooc chance here to usurp the 4/6 favourite Zverev in this match.
