Roger Federer became the second man in the Open Era to lift 100 singles titles behind Jimmy Connors as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Dubai Open. Here’s a lowdown of some of the statistics associated with Federer’s 100 titles.
Federer’s first ever title had come in February 2001 when he defeated Julien Boutter of France at the Milan Indoors in Italy on carpet. This was his third final in a span of 12 months and after losing at Marseille and Swiss Indoors, he finally won his first.
Little would he have known at that stage that he would go on to win 99 more.
20 of those 99 came at Grand Slams, six at ATP year-ending final tournaments and a whopping 27 Masters titles including seven at the Cincinnati Masters. He has also won the Swiss Indoors competition and the Halle Open on nine separate occasions and the Dubai Championships eight times, including this 2019 win that took him to his 100th.
Wimbledon has obviously been his favourite major, with eight titles to his name there while he has won the Australian Open a record seven times.
His first major title was the 2003 Wimbledon, when he beat Mark Philippoussis in straight sets to lift the trophy, before adding three more to that list in 2004 where he won all but the Australian Open.
Here’s a list of Federer’s titles:
First title: Milan Indoors 2001 beat Julien Boutter 6-4, 6-7, 6-4
10th: Vienna Open 2003 beat Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
25th: Dubai Open 2005 beat Ivan Ljubicic 6-1, 6-7, 6-3
50th: Cincinnati Masters 2007 beat James Blake 6-1, 6-4
100th: Dubai Open 2019 beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4
Federer’s most titles came by beating Rafael Nadal in the final, which he did 10 times, while Andy Roddick was beaten seven times. The other finalists include Novak Djokovic (six), Andy Murray (five) and Ivan Ljubicic (four).
69 of Federer’s titles have come on hard court surfaces, 18 on carpet, 11 on clay and two, very early in his career, on carpet.
