Baez Eases Past Bellucci

Thomaz Bellucci would have entered his first round match hoping he could take advantage of Baez’s shock first round exit at the Argentina Open last week but he was in for a shock himself.

Baez was back to playing some of his best tennis as the Argentine carved out a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bellucci in a match lasting an hour and 36 minutes.

He faced just two break-points in the entire match but saved both while also getting the better of Bellucci’s serve three times in the encounter. With a first serve point win percentage of 80%, Baez easily overpowered his opponent who struggled with the same.

This follows a title win for Baez at Cordoba which came two weekends ago, after which an exhausted self fell to Dusan Lajovic in the opener in Buenos Aires. He will need to be vary of his opponent here who has been in some solid form in recent times.

Varillas Coming off Win Over Gaston

After having risen 18 spots in the ranking following his top-notch performance at the Argentina Open last week, Varillas did not let his form go to waste as he eased past Hugo Gaston in the first round here.

Varillas, who had made the semifinal in Buenos Aires after starting out as a qualifier, carved out a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Gaston in the first round here. The match lasted nearly two hours.

Off the blocks quickly, Varillas took a 3-1 lead in the first set only to lose control and serve in the sixth game. At 5-5, however, he earned three break-points and converted the third of those before serving out for the set.

The second set turned out to be slightly easier for Varillas who galloped to a 4-0 lead with two breaks of serves. A late break-back did not matter too much as Varillas then used his second opportunity to serve out the match and did so to love.

Can he now continue his good form against a player of the calibre of Baez?

Baez v Varillas Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a close encounter that might go either way. Expecting a three-setter here.
