Pedro Cachin v Juan Manuel Cerundolo Head to Head

Cerundolo won their only meeting at a Chalenger event in 2021.

Cachin Off to a Terrible Start

Last year, Pedro Cachin had a brilliant 55-22 season, which included four Challenger titles from seven finals. He also reached the second round of the French Open on his major debut and the third round on his U.S. Open debut.

As a result of those performances, Cachin broke into the top 60, peaking to a career high of no. 54 in November.

He would have hoped to build on those performances this year, but the 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact this year. He has played plenty of tournaments but has just one win so far in 2023. That win came over Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in Buenos Aires. Those are the only two sets that Cachin has won this year.

He brings a 1-7 record to Santiago, where he will be making his debut.

Cachin lost his first round matches in Adelaide, Aukland and the Australian Open and also lost his singles match at the Davis Cup in the first phase of the season. As the tour moved to the clay courts of South America, Cachin did regsiter his first win but he is 1-3 so far. Most recently, he suffered a first round defeat against Daniel Elahi Galan in the first round in Rio.

Cerundolo Tops Delbonis

Juan Manuel Cerundolo defeated Fedreico Delbonis in the second qualifying round on Sunday to enter the main draw in Santiago.

Cerundolo, 21, will play in Santiago for the third time. He has not gone beyond the round of 16 in the past two years.

On Sunday, he was broken once by the fellow Argentine, but Cerundolo converted half of the six break points that he held to score a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The win came a day after he came back from a set down to beat Chile’s Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the first qualifying round.

Cerundolo has an overall record of 17-5 this year. He has only played on clay this season and captured the Tiegre and Tiegre-2 Challenger crowns to start the year. He won 12 matches in a row, before losing his first match in the Concepcion Challenger quarterfinal.

At the tour level, he beat Pablo Andujar and Diego Schwartzman in the first two rounds in Cordoba, before falling in the last eight stage. He also made it to the main draw in Rio, but went down to Cameron Norrie in the first round.

Cerundolo, who won the Cordoba title on his ATP main draw debut in 2021, will be looking to make a solid impression in Santiago. Can the world no. 108 make a winning start in Santiago?

Cachin v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Cachin is the higher-ranked player but form is on Cerundolo’s side at the moment. The latter has played a lot more than Cachin and won matches consistently this season. He is also coming off two good qualifying round wins. Expect the lefty to edge past Cachin in opener.
