Alex de Minaur shined in round one of Acapulco beating a native player 6-1 6-2. It was largely expected because the conditions give him a lot of time to track down balls which is how he likes to play. It’s a slow court, the ball bounces high and his speed is a major weapon.
It’s something all of his opponents will struggle with. He made the quarter-final in 2019 here and it’s likely he goes further beyond that because he improved so much as a player since then.
De Minaur improved his serve, the groundstrokes look really good as well and it’s been a nice start to the year for him. Some very good results but the level has been consistent. That’s the most important thing for him because he struggled with that in the past.
Generally, he does well with the favourite role. He’s not one to lose matches that he shouldn’t lose and I think he’ll cruise in this one.

Berrettini’s Dream Continues
Jacopo Berrettini will play in the second round of the Acapulco event after he advanced due to an injury to his opponent. The Italian has played some good tennis in the qualifiers to book a spot in the main draw and he’ll now contest a place in the third round.
The match against Otte went kind of like you thought it would go. The German was on top in the first set but Berrettini responded in the second set powered by his serve. It was cut short by an injury to the German but it was likely that would not win.
Berrettini is a tricky player because he keeps matches close. He’s hard to break, the serve is decent and he’s full of confidence right now.
He doesn’t have the talent of his brother and there are ways you can defeat him with de Minaur having all the tools to do so. He will need to find a way to finish off points easy and not get dragged into long rallies with de Minaur.

de Minaur is the far better player and should have this one comfortably. The Italian will struggle to finish off points which will likely be his downfall. Take de Minaur to get it done in two sets.
