Sloane Stephens v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions.

Their most recent encounter came last week in Merida where Stephens needed a final set tie-breaker to get past Gracheva.

Stephens Eases Past Watson

For the second time in a row, Stephens has now won successive matches in a tournament to enter the quarterfinal. She did that in Merida last week with wins over Leolia Jeanjean and Gracheva herself but that did not end too well for Stephens.

The former US Open winner was double-bagelled by Camila Giorgi in their last eight match in a surprise result given the nature of the scoreline.

It would have been easy for Stephens to wither away from that defeat but she has done well now to bounce back in this tournament.

In the first round she sent Taylor Townsend packing 6-3, 6-3 to set up a second round meeting with Britain’s Heather Watson. And while Watson put up a bit more of a fight, Stephens won her second round match 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 27 minutes to enter the quarterfinals again.

The match was filled with breaks as Stephens also dropped her serve four times in the encounter. If she wants to make it past the last eight stage, she would do well to start serving better than what she did in the second round. And at the quarterfinal stage of the tournament last week too.

Gracheva Edges Past Blinkova

There wasn’t too much to choose between Gracheva and her second round opponent Anna Blinkova as far as her odds are concerned. And that’s what reflected in their match too with Gracheva needing three sets and more than two hours to get past her opponent.

Gracheva won 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 after having frittered away a chance to serve out the match at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set. In the third, however, she raced off to a 4-0 lead with two breaks of serves and eventually closed out to 15 in the seventh game.

This follows a stunning first round win over the in-form and world number 21 Magda Linette.

Gracheva has been a top-60 player in the world at one point but fell to 100th at the start of this season. She has risen to her current ranking of 88th and another win here could take her close to the top 70 on the rankings charts.

Stephens v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

Stephens will be a favourite here but she does have a tendency to blow hot and cold at times, and against an opponent she had struggled to overcome last week it would be tough to pick her to win this. In fact, at 6/4, it looks like Gracheva has good odds to go with her as a winner here.
