Sebastian Baez v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

This rivalry dates back to the Futures circuit days of 2019 when they met each other four times on that tour. Both had won two matches apiece then.

In 2022 in Lyon they faced off for the first time at the highest level Baez had won it in straight sets.

Baez Dodges the Djere Bullet

It wasn’t the easiest straight-set win but Baez came through his quarterfinal against Laslo Djere to make his second ATP semifinal of the season.

Having won the title at the Cordoba Open last month, Baez had followed it up with an opening round loss at the Buenos Aires Open and a quarterfinal appearance in Rio. This week, he had a first round bye before defeating Cristian Garin and Djere to enter the semis.

And it took him nearly two hours to come through, winning 7-6 (4), 6-4 against his Serb opponent.

The first set was very closely fought with a total of only one break-point coming either player’s way before Baez clinched the tie-breaker. In the second, the serving went for a toss as it was Djere who went 3-1 up ahead before Baez broke right back and then did the same as he prepared to serve to stay in the match.

Baez looks to be on a roll this season and should have supreme confidence coming into this encounter.

Etcheverry Sends Lajovic Packing

Having earlier made it to the quarterfinal of the Buenos Aires Open, Etcheverry has now gone one better with his sterling performance against Dusan Lajovic to enter the last four.

Etcheverry carved out a 6-1, 6-2 win in a mere hour and 24 minutes to set up this semifinal meeting with his countryman.

Six aces and a first serve win statistic of 77% punctuated Etcheverry’s game, who saved all of the three break-points he faced. In return, he broke his opponent four times in the encounter – twice in each of the sets – and did not have a lot of difficulties all match.

This follows wins over two tricky opponents earlier in the competition for Etcheverry.

He first overcame Fabio Fognini in his opener before stunning Francisco Cerundolo in a hard-fought three-setter in the second. Can he now get past Baez who has shown he is on the top of his game?

Baez v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Baez is our pick to start off as a favourite with odds of 8/15 for his victory being quite tempting. The bigger question is whether we will see a hard-fought encounter and I would like to believe the answer to that is yes.
