Giron Steady in 2023

While Giron enters this tournament on the back of successive defeats, a lot of credit must go to him for his consistency otherwise.

The American has reached the quarterfinal stage of three tournaments this season, including two as recently as the Dallas Open and the Delray Beach Open. Earlier he had done the same at the Auckland Open too.

And at two of those three, defeats had come at the hands of Cameron Norrie and Taylor Fritz – players who are probably aiming to make the ATP Finals this season.

More recently, however, Giron would have been slightly surprised by a Delray Beach Open quarterfinal loss to Miomir Kecmanovic and an opening defeat at the hands of Michael Mmoh in Acapulco.

Can Giron shrug those losses aside and work his way to emulating his best ever showing at a Masters 1000 tournament which came here in 2019?

Kovacevic on the Verge of Breaking into Top 100

Kovacevic has been more renowned for his performances on the lower circuit and that can also been seen from the fact that he has played just five matches at the top-most rung of the ATP Tour.

This year too, he’s played just one main draw match at the highest level – it came at the Delray Beach Open – and he had lost that encounter.

That being said, one would wonder why has he been awarded a wildcard entry into this tournament?

It’s for the kind of promise he has shown this season, having won two Challenger titles already. These tournament wins, at the Cleveland Challenger and the Waco Challenger, were his first two career titles at any level and have propelled him to 107th in the world – his career-best ranking.

And if he can continue with something similar, Kovacevic could soon be breaking into the top 100 and getting direct entries into Grand Slam competitions.

Can he get past his fellow American opponent here though?

Giron v Kovacevic Prediction and Tip

Giron has a tough one here given how well Kovacevic has played in Challenger competitions. Could see a three-setter that goes Giron’s way in the end.
