Diego Schwartzman v Federico Coria Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, these two did play each other on the Futures circuit way back in 2010 and 2012. Schwartzman had won both of them in straight sets.

Schwartzman Form in Dire Straits

Only as recently as the previous season, Schwartzman was gunning to break back into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings. 12 months on, he has fallen to 38th in the world and with seemingly no answers to break his free-fall.

And free-fall it has been for sure. Not just from the perspective of his ranking but also the results which have ceased to go in his favour this season.

Schwartzman has featured in six tournaments this year, including four on his favourite clay, but won a mere one match. That’s right, he enters the Indian Wells Open with a 1-6 win-loss record under his belt.

His only victory came at the Australian Open in January but since then Schwartzman has lost five in a row including four on clay. That’s as underwhelming as things can get for a player of Schwartzman’s calibre on a surface that he relishes.

The only piece of silver lining for Schwartzman here is he is up against a player who has a career record of 6-20 in hardcourt competitions at the highest level.

Coria Solid on Clay But Struggling Elsewhere

Unlike Schwartzman, Coria enters this tournament on the back of good form. He won the Challenger title at Concepcion in January and followed it up with a Cordoba Open performance where he made the final before going down fighting against Sebastian Baez.

Unfortunately for Coria, however, the difference between his showing in clay and hardcourt competitions is rather immense.

In fact, Coria rarely participates in tournaments other than those on clay, having played nearly 900 matches on the red dirt across all the circuits in his career to a mere 57 across all the other court surfaces!

Coria has also won just two main draw matches in ATP 1000 tournaments – and one of them came at the Indian Wells Open last season. His opponent there was Pablo Cuevas.

Schwartzman v Coria Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman might be in the best of form, he would still hope to do better than Coria in a hardcourt competition. Expect him to come through in straight sets.
