Thiago Monteiro v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, all of them on clay, although only one of those meetings was on the senior tour in Rio three years ago, with Monteiro the winner.

Prior to that, Pella had won three out of their four matches on the junior tours.

Monteiro Made the Quarterfinal in Santiago

Not only has Monteiro never been further than the first round of Indian Wells before, but he has never been further than that in any Masters event he has entered in his career.

Given, though, his favourable draw, he may be thinking that this is the year to end that streak, ironically in a season where he has been struggling for form so far.

Indeed, prior to his first round win on home soil in Rio, one would have had to go back to Gijon in October last year to find his last victory on the main tour.

However, given a last chance to impress on his favourite surface of clay for a while, he found some improvement in Chile last week.

He beat the fifth seed Albert-Ramos Vinolas of Spain, and then the Italian Marco Cecchinato, both in three sets, to earn himself a quarter-final with Jaume Munar of Spain. That match, too, went to three sets, with the Spaniard coming out on top.

But Monteiro would have gained a degree of confidence from his performance in Santiago.

Pella on a Comeback Trail

Pella has gained entrance to the main draw in Indian Wells because of his Protected Ranking, having only returned to the main tour at the Australian Open after 16 months’ absence because of a serious right knee injury.

By his own admission, the man ranked 20 in the world less than four years ago, has had to curtail his tennis ambitions, and regards just to be back playing again as a bonus in itself.

Prior to the injury, he was regarded very much as a lay court player, and he had a patchy record in Indian Wells, with his best run coming in 2020 when he reached the third round.

This will be just his fifth match of the year so far. He was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open and Buenos Aires, the previous week, having marked the first win of his comeback, beating the Italian Andrea Vavassori in the first round in Cordoba.

The Bolivian Hugo Dellien ended his interest in the tournament in the second round.

Monteiro v Pella Prediction and Tip

Given his poor record in this event, Monteiro would not normally have a great deal of confidence going into this match.

But, reaching the quarter-finals in Santiago would have instilled some self-belief and, given the circumstances of his opponent, he will consider himself the favourite.
