Sock Reliant on a Wildcard This Year

In 2015, Sock reached the fourth round in Indian Wells, and two years later, he got to the semi-finals. That was in his hey-day – that same year he was ranked in the top ten in the world and won the Paris Masters.

Since then, though a string of injuries combined with struggles with form have seen his ranking plummet, and recent successes have been confined to the doubles court – he was a Wimbledon quarter-finalist last year.

It means that he has had to rely on a wildcard from tournament organisers this year.

This will be only his fourth tournament of the season, which only started for him at the end of January on the Challenger tour – he chose not to try and qualify for the Australian Open.

His first round victory in Dallas over Illya Ivashka remains his solitary win of 2023 so far.

He was then beaten in the second round, and subsequently in the first round of Delray Beach by the Croat, Matija Pecotic, the world number 572.

Barrere Making His Masters’ Debut

Unlike Sock, Barrere has never played in Indian Wells, Indeed, he has never qualified for the main draw of any Masters’ tournament before.

Yet he arrives in California, full of confidence, having reached six Challenger finals in 2022, winning two of them.

And he has already been a winner at that level in 2023 as well, lifting the trophy on home soil in Quimper in January.

He followed that up by reaching the quarter-finals on the main tour in Montpellier, and then came through qualifying to make the main draw in Rotterdam suffering s second round loss to Felix Augur-Aliassime.

Barrere’s most recent appearance was in Marseille, where he reached the second round again, losing this time to the Kazakh Alexander Bublik.

Sock v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Although Sock has much greater experience of playing in Masters’ events and has a good record in this tournament, he is a shadow of the player that got to the last four here six years ago.

Barrere’s stock, by contrast is on the rise, and he will be hopeful of marking his debut in the California desert with a win.
