Sofia Kenin v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came at the WTA Toronto last season and Stephens had won that opening round match in three sets.

Kenin 1-5 in the Last Six Matches

Kenin looked to have shrugged off poor form and fitness earlier this season when she made it to the semifinal of the Hobart International with wins over Lin Zhu an Anhelina Kalinina. Soon after, however, things looked to have gone south for the American.

She went down to Elisabetta Cocciaretto in that semifinal encounter, before going on a bit of a losing streak.

Victoria Azarenka got the better of her in the first round of the Australian Open, Jule Niemeier defeated her in the Linz Open opener and while she surprised Liudmilla Samsonova at Doha, it was followed by two more defeats. They came against Veronika Kudermetova and Marie Bouzkova.

As a result, Kenin has fallen back on the WTA charts, ranked 170th in the world at the moment.

And while she is not defending any points after having fallen in the opener here last season, Kenin will want to do a lot better than what she has this year to climb back into the top 100 for starters.

Stephens Solid in Merida & Austin

After making an abysmal start to the year with three first round defeats in the first three tournaments she played, Stephens has come into her own in the following two competitions.

The world number 48 had her struggles but still managed to make it to the quarterfinal of the Merida Open and followed it up with wins over Taylor Townsend and Heather Watson to repeat the same in Austin.

What would bother Stephens is the manner in which she suddenly goes off the boil. Like was the case in her Merida quarterfinal against Camila Giorgi. Sure, Giorgi was the favourite but at 3/5 she wasn’t overwhelmingly so.

And yet, Giorgi came away a 6-0, 6-0 winner.

Similarly, her first three losses of the season to Rebeka Masarova, Lauren Davis and Anastasia Potapova were all in straight sets too.

Which makes us question – which side of Stephens will we see come the first round of this competition?

Kenin v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between these two players and that can be seen from the odds on offer which are 10/11 for either player’s win. We could end up with a three-setter in which Stephens edges through.
