Aryna Sabalenka v Evgeniya Rodina Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players at the highest level and another on the ITF circuit. These matches in 2016 and 2017 were both won by Sabalenka.

Sabalenka Starts Proceedings after Dubai Quarterfinal Defeat

The winner of the first Grand Slam of the year, Sabalenka is one of the favourites to lift the title here for the first time. To do that, Sabalenka will need to do a lot better than she has in her previous trips to Indian Wells having never gone beyond the fourth round here.

Sabalenka will know though this is the best she has been playing for a while.

Sure she lost in the quarterfinal of the WTA Dubai in the last tournament she featured in but that was her first defeat of the season. To go with that, Sabalenka has won 13 matches including two titles – at the Australian Open and the Adelaide International.

The Belarusian number one starts things off against a player ranked 427th in the world and should be a heavy favourite here. What she does after that would be of particularly more interest.

Rodina Stuns Cornet in Early Days of Her Return

After a two-year gap, Rodina returned to competitive tennis last season when she featured in the US Open. A first round win there against Martina Trevisan and another win against Elena Gabriela Ruse in Monastir.

However, she didn’t play too much after that and only returned this year to feature at the Australian Open where she was beaten by Katie Volynets in the opener.

When you are a 34-year-old returning to the fold after that long a gap and have played just a couple of tournaments, it wasn’t surprising to see Rodina start off a 4/1 underdog in her match here against Alize Cornet.

Cornet herself hasn’t been in the best of form but at the same time she would have been expected to come through easily. Instead Rodina shocked those watching by defeating her French opponent 6-2, 7-5 to set this second round match up.

Can she make it tough for Sabalenka?

Sabalenka v Rodina Prediction and Tip

One cannot expect too much from Rodina here but given she hasn’t played too much, Sabalenka might take some time to get used to her style. That gives us a chance to go with the games market.
