Donna Vekic v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came as recently as about 10 days ago where Vekic came through following her opponent’s retirement from the match. At that time Tsurenko had won the first set but Vekic was leading 5-0 in the second.

Vekic’s Superlative Form Sees Her Ranking Take a Jump
Only last year Vekic was ranked 112th in the world with her injury issues making life very difficult for her on court. So much so that Vekic was contemplating retirement.
Since then, however, she has shown a steady improvement, ending the previous season ranked 67th. And this year, the Croat has rocketed from where she left off in 2022.
Of the 18 matches that Vekic has played in 2023, she has won 16 including a couple of them at the Kooyong Exhibition. It’s the remaining 14 wins, however, that have ensured she is now closing in on her former career-best ranking of 19th on the WTA charts.
Having not participated in this tournament last season, she isn’t defending any points and any kind of a deep run should help break into the top 20. Vekic enters this competition on the back of a title win in Monterrey too, so confidence should be of no concern.

Tsurenko Shocks Zhu
Lin Zhu is one of the most improved players on the circuit and might well have been a seeded player in this competition had a couple of the top players pulled out. Which is why her straight-set rout at the hands of Tsurenko would have pleased the latter no end.
Tsurenko was on court for an hour and 43 minutes in which she registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Zhu to set up a second round meeting with Vekic. This will be the sixth time in her career that Tsurenko will be playing in the second round at this competition in Indian Wells.
Having entered the tournament on the back of successive qualifier wins, the Hua Hin Open runner-up traded four breaks of serves with Zhu in the first four games of the match. Two more followed soon after before she registered a decisive break in the ninth game following which she served out the set.
In the second set, Tsurenko failed to hold on to the early advantage she had at 3-1 but then broke Zhu in successive games – the seventh and ninth – to come through.
Can she pull out a similar rabbit out of her tennis hat against the world number 23?
