Cori Gauff v Cristina Bucsa Head to Head

While Gauff has three title victories on the WTA circuit and has broken through to a career-best ranking of fourth in the world, she is yet to lift a trophy at the majors or a WTA 1000 event. Remember she is only 18 years old, so it could well be a matter of when and not if given Gauff’s talent.
And that’s the point – given the pedigree associated with Gauff’s tennis, there is a question at every such big-ticket tournament if this would be the one where she goes the distance.
At the Indian Wells Open, Gauff hasn’t done that well in the past though.
In both her previous appearances, Gauff has made the third round but not gone farther than that. In fact her record at the WTA 1000s isn’t too bad but isn’t yet exemplary either.
Gauff’s best showing in such tournaments is a semifinal appearance on two separate occasions – one at the Italian Open in 2021 and the other at the WTA Dubai earlier this year.
The question is if she can leapfrog the likes of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula to lift this trophy this time. She shouldn’t have too much trouble starting out against Bucsa here though.

Bucsa Makes it Two Surprises in a Row
The world number 90 Bucsa needed to make it to the main draw of this tournament by featuring in the qualifiers. And in the second round there, she surprised Elena Gabriela Ruse in straight sets despite starting out a 6/4 underdog.
What followed is another upset win for Bucsa in the first round of the main draw. Starting out on 11/10 odds to defeat Britain’s Katie Swan, the Spaniard huffed and puffed her way to a victory despite it being in straight sets.
Bucsa needed two hours and 17 minutes and survived five breaks of serves in her first round encounter to win it 7-6 (6), 7-5. In fact she was down a break five times in the match, faced one set-point in the first set and six of them in the second but never allowed Swan to get away.
It is that never-say-die spirit that will hold Bucsa in a good stead going into her second round match against Gauff. Will that help her push her sixth-ranked opponent, however, is a different story.

Gauff should have absolutely no problem here and should come through in straight sets.
