Ekaterina Alexandrova v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Alexandrova who is 28, and her Chinese opponent, seven years her junior.

Alexandrova Gets First Round Bye

This will be Alexandrova’s third appearance in this tournament. She reached the third round in 2019 and the second round last year, and was guaranteed to reach at least that stage again after being given a first round bye.

Last year she enjoyed a fine season on tour, winning the Rosmalen Open on grass and the Korea Open a few months later on hard courts.

Her 2023 began well, and she reached the third round of the Australian Open for the second time in her career, emulating her previous best in a Grand Slam event.

Since then she has been beaten in the first round in Linz, and was beaten by Maria Sakkari in Doha.

Wang Knocks Out Erratic Mertens

Twice a junior Grand Slam winner in doubles, this is the first time that Wang has appeared in the main draw of Indian Wells. Her two previous attempts both ended at the first stage of qualifying.

Thankfully, from her point of view, she was spared such rigours this time round by virtue of her world ranking, but still would have felt some trepidation when she discovered that she was drawn against Elise Mertens, even if the Belgian is not in good form right now, with her ranking having slipped to 37 in the world.

From Wang’s point of view the match could hardly have gone better.

In a chaotic first set, the Chinese woman dropped her serve three times, but that was more than enough as Mertens dropped her own five times.

Wang tightened up her game in the second set whilst Mertens continued to perform erratically, only holding serve once in the entire match.

Mertens belatedly made some sort of fight for it, and saved two match points, but it was a case of too little too late by then.

Alexandrova v Wang Prediction and Tip

Whilst Wang will relish the chance of appearing in the second round of this tournament, Alexandrova’s all round game should be too strong for her, and she is unlikely to be such a generous opponent as Mertens proved to be.
