Defending champion at this tournament in Indian Wells, Fritz enters its 2023 edition on the back of some solid performances and two title wins.
One of them was a team event at the United Cup that Fritz helped the USA win, clinching four singles wins in that competition from the five matches he played. This was followed by a title in Delray Beach.
Fritz has also made it through to two other semifinals – at Dallas and Acapulco – but the one that might rankle him is his second round defeat at the Australian Open. Losing to Alexei Popyrin that early would have hurt.
Which is also why a solid run in a tournament as big as this will be foremost on his mind. Not to mention the fact Fritz is defending 1000 points from having won the title here last year.

Shelton Cruises Past Fognini
The highlight of Shelton’s season – and indeed his career – came at the Australian Open where he made it past JJ Wolf to enter the quarterfinal of that tournament. Unfortunately for the American, the rest of the results before this competition haven’t quite gone his way.
A first round defeat at Adelaide, Delray Beach and Acapulco and another loss in the second round of the Adelaide International 2 would have raised questions about the nature of his performance at the season’s first Grand Slam.
This first round win over Fognini would have helped in calming some of those nerves.
It took him a mere hour and 12 minutes to overcome Fognini 6-4, 6-1, getting back from a break down early in the match to get the better of his opponent’s serve four times in the encounter.
