Carlos Alcaraz v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

Alcaraz and Kokkinakis have never faced off before this.

Alcaraz Returns after Injury Scare

Having returned to competitive tennis following a lengthy layoff that consisted of giving the Australian Open a miss, Alcaraz went on to win a title at the Buenos Aires Open and made it all the way to the final of the Rio Open.

He was on his way to making it to two titles in a row in Rio, facing the same opponent in the final in the form of Cameron Norrie, but a leg injury turned things around. Norrie went on to win that final in three sets.

Later Alcaraz withdrew from the Acapulco Open as a result of that leg injury, and he revealed he had a grade one strain in his right hamstring.

Fortunately for him, he looks to have recovered quickly enough to be able to participate in this tournament, a competition in which he was a semifinalist last season. Can he now shrug his fitness scares away and push deep into the tournament?

Kokkinakis Routs Holt

Kokkinakis, who had come through the qualifiers in this tournament, overcame Brandon Holt in his opening round win to set up this meeting with the top seed.

Having never won a singles match at the Indian Wells Open before this, Kokkinakis was on court for a mere hour and 17 minutes in his 6-4, 6-1 rout of the American Holt.

Slamming nine aces and winning 32 of his 34 service points, Kokkinakis did not face a single break-point in the entire match. He earned 10 of those in return and broke Holt four times.

This win is in line with the kind of form Kokkinakis has shown all season, having won at least one round at every tournament he’s played this year. His peak came at the Adelaide International 2 where he reached the semifinal while also going on to win the Manama Challenger title more recently.

Can he put up a fight here?

Alcaraz v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

The only silver lining for Kokkinakis here is his serve and if he can keep getting those booming aces in, who knows he might be able to earn himself a longer match. Alcaraz still the favourite to win in straight sets.
