Borna Coric v Alex Molcan Head to Head

Molcan leads Coric 1-0 in their head-to-head, with their quarterfinal match at Hamburg last year classified as a retirement win after the Croatian star retired while trailing 6-7 0-2.

Coric Could Surprise At the Desert

Borna Coric produced a tremendous run at this tournament back in 2018, coming through a tough section of the draw unscathed, beating the likes of Bautista Agut and Taylor Fritz en route to the semifinal.

The Croat led the Swiss Maestro deep in the third set, but with the finish line in sight, Coric imploded and lost the deciding set 6-4. It was a painful learning experience, but Coric took positives from that encounter and would go on to enjoy a winning record over the retired legend.

Although Coric’s next two visits to California haven’t gone according to plan, he was hardly in good physical shape to make a deep run. But this year, he might have a surprise up his sleeve.

With a 7-5 record for the year, Coric arrives at the BNP Paribas Open on the back of two successive ATP quarterfinals. A week ago, he lost to Daniil Medvedev, the eventual winner, at the Dubai Championships.

Molcan Romps Past Ramos Vinolas

Despite entering his first-round match at the Indian Wells Masters as the clear underdog at 6/5, Alex Molcan proved a step ahead of Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas.

The Slovak took an hour and 23 minutes to polish up a 6-3 6-2 win against the World No.  50. It was a matchup pitting two clay-court specialists, but with the courts at the desert playing extremely slow this year, both players looked like they would thrive in these conditions.

Molcan had retired with a wrist injury in Acapulco, and there was a huge cloud of doubt on whether he might be able to overpower Ramos Vinolas. But it looks like the injury might have been precautionary, with the Slovak wrapping up the first set 6-3 with a break of serve.

In the second set, Ramos Vinolas had a disastrous start dropping his first service game and he never quite recovered. Molcan secured the insurance break late to clinch the win.

Coric v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Molcan’s win came as surprise considering his recent injury in Acapulco. But Coric is superior to the Slovak in almost every department. Take the Croat to win here quite convincingly.
