Martina Trevisan had a rollercoaster opening week of the season, being part of the Italian team that went all the way to the final of the United Cup. That run included a stunning upset over Greece’s Maria Sakkari, a rare top-10 scalp for the 29-year-old on hard court.
But things went awry for Trevisan since then. Defeat to Jessica Pegula in her singles rubber in the final kickstarted a major slump.
Trevisan lost four in a row after that with perhaps the most disappointing of those defeats coming in the first round of the Australian Open to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
The Italian lefty has retained her top-30 ranking, but that was large because she didn’t have a ton of points to defend between February and March. Although it is vital she picks up some wins in North America before the crucial stretch on clay.

Brengle Overcomes Siegemund In Two
Madison Brengle got the better of Germany’s Laura Siegemund, winning their opening round 7-6 6-4 in two hours and 3 minutes.
It marks the first time Brengle has won a match at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells since 2019. However, the bad news is that she has not progressed beyond this stage in each of her previous eight visits.
Brengle overcame a slow start after falling 0-4 down with a double-break deficit. But remarkably, Siegemund could not see out the set and was pegged back before Brengle went on to snatch the ensuing tiebreak.
In the second set, it was a recurrence of the same scenario, with Brengle storming back from 0-3 down and going on to break Siegemund’s serve a couple of times to win the match.
Overall, the American deserved to win, landing 75% of her first serves and winning 65% return points.
Trevisan v Brengle Prediction and Tip
Trevisan has been in terrible form and hard courts are not her cup of tea. Although these slow conditions might play to her liking, the American should be heavily favored to come out on top.
