Rybakina Battles Past Kenin
Elena Rybakina began her Indian Wells quest with a straight sets win over Sofia Kenin in the second round on Saturday.
The 10th seed, who had a first round bye, needed two hours and eight minutes to beat the American in two tiebreaks.
The Kazakh was the first to break in the first set but failed to close out the match at 5-3, as Kenin broke back to stay on serve. The tiebreak was a close affair with both players exchanging three mini-breaks each over the first 12 points, but then Rybakina got a fourth mini-break to take a one-set-to-love lead.
In the second set, it was was the world no. 170 who got an early break to build a 4-1 lead, but Rybakina clawed her way back into the set and then finished off the match in the tiebreak. The 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) win for the world no. 10 saw her serve six aces and win 80% points on her first serve.
Rybakina, who is the reigning Wimbledon champion, was a finalist at the Australian Open this year, suffering a tough three-set defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the title clash. She was playing on Saturday for the first time since withdrawing from the third round of the Dubai Championships due to a lower back injury.
In all Rybakina is 11-4 for the season, and while she will be hoping to improve that record on Monday, she faces an opponent against whom she has struggled in their past five meetings.

Badosa Wins Battle of Spaniards
No. 21 seed Paula Badosa made a good start to her Indian Wells campaign with a straight sets win over compatriot Nuria Parrizas-Diaz.
The first set was a straight forward one with Badosa clinching the set with a double break. But Parrizas-Diaz showed fight in the second.
Badosa went up a break on three occasions in the first 10 games of the second set but Parrizas-Diaz broke back on all three occasions to keep the set tied at 5-5. However, Badosa got a fourth break in the set in the 11th game and then served out the match in the next for a 6-2, 7-5 victory in an hour and 38 minutes.
The victory ended a two-match losing streak for the Spaniard. Badosa had lost in the first rounds in Doha and Dubai.
She had started off the season well, reaching the semifinals in Adelaide-2, but a thigh injury sustained in the quarterfinals of that tournament forced her to withdraw from the semifinals and also the Australian Open.
Rybakina v Badosa Prediction and Tip
Rybakina has a poor record against Badosa and that should encourage the Spaniard, but going by form Rybakina holds the edge in this contest. Expect a tough three-set contest with Rybakina advancing.
