Perhaps the most surprising thing about Andy Murray’s latest win over Radu Albot was that it was in straight sets. Murray defeated the Moldovan 6-4 6-3 for his 10th match win of 2023.
It is the first time this year that the Scotsman won an ATP match in straight sets and in under two hours. It took him an hour and 42 minutes – over an hour and a half more than he required to beat first-round opponent Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Murray’s preparation was not affected one bit despite a change of opponent. Pablo Carreno Busta was scheduled to take on the British former World No. 1, but an elbow injury ruled him out of the tournament. In came lucky loser Albot, who looked set to take Murray to Iron Man territory.
But Murray got the crucial break deep in the first set and the expression on his face told the whole story. Murray garnered the only break he needed in the second set and was winning most baseline duels. Albot’s 35 unforced errors (almost twice Murray’s numbers) proved his own downfall.

Draper Strings Back-to-Back Wins
Jack Draper won the all-British second-round match against Dan Evans, 6-4 6-2, in two hours. Draper has been overtaken by Murray as the British No. 3, but it looks like it will be soon enough before he gets his ranking moving in the right trajectory.
Draper repeatedly snuffed danger against Evans with eight aces to his name, although he will be keen to cut down the double fault counts when he plays a quality returner like Murray.
The 21-year-old lefty saved 10 of 11 break points and went on to convert four of his own to reach the third round of Indian Wells on his debut appearance.
Draper landed 57% first serves which was significantly lower than in his opening-round masterclass against Leandro Riedi. Should he clean up his serve, he will be heavily favored against Murray.
Murray v Draper Prediction and Tip
Draper’s first full season on the ATP Tour has been an eventful one. From reaching an ATP semifinal in Adelaide 2 to playing Rafael Nadal in the first round of the Australian Open, it looks like the tests will follow in the coming weeks.
Here is one, against a resurgent Andy Murray. But Draper’s biggest test this week was his form and fitness, and it looks like he won on both fronts. Draper’s serve has been near-impregnable and it could prove to be the difference maker on Monday.
