Leylah Fernandez v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

They played once so far and it happened this year at the Australian Open. It was a fairly close match which Garcia won in two sets.

Fernandez Wins Indian Wells Opener

Leylah Fernandez did well to take down native player Emma Navarro in her opener. It was an interesting match as both players struggled with the windy conditions which impacted serving. Fernandez had multiple double faults but battled back from a 0-3 deficit in the second set to advance in straight sets.

She won’t be afforded the same luxury against Garcai because the French player will punish any such development heavily. Fernandez will need to be sharp in this one and even then it might not be enough.

She was pretty decent at the Australian Open but Garcia still found a way to get it done. The serve will be hugely important because if she can’t get a few short balls back, then her forehand won’t be able to do much damage.

She’s not a player that defends very well so anytime she’s under heavy pressure can be a problem for her. The higher bounce both works in her favour and against her because Garcia does have the flatter groundstrokes which are a bit more effective in these conditions.

Garcia Scraps Through to 3rd Round

Caroline Garcia didn0t have a brilliant first match at Indian Wells but she had moments where she showed that she can be dangerous if she finds a better rhythm. Her play has been too much up and down this year, far more than last year.

It’s actually quite in life with her career in general outside of those two incredible runs she had. She’s also been quite beatable as she lost two finals and in both she was the heavy favourite to win.

She created chances on return but then simply can’t convert them. It proved an issue in both the Lyon Open and Monterrey Open final and it certainly was an issue against Dalfi in the previous round.

She had chances in the second set but failed to use any ending up in a tiebreak. Tiebreaks are dangerous for her because the way she splays and attacks will always create errors. In a ‘elongated game’ where every point matters 10 times as much, that’s a major problem.

Fernandez v Garcia Prediction and Tip

This match should be on Garcia’s racquet. She has more power, her tennis is flatter and suits these kinds of conditions a bit more. The question remains whether she’ll be consistent enough to win the match. I think she will but not in two sets.
