Roberto Carballes Baena v Bernabe Zapata Miralles Head to Head
They played an incredible 7 times so far with two of those coming this year. Carballes Baena leads 5-2 with this year’s matchups being won by both sides. Baena won on hard courts while Zapata won on clay courts.

Carballes Baena arrives in Miami with 3 consecutive losses and no wins on hard courts in North America. To be fair, he only had two tries so far losing both in Indian Wells and the Phoenix Challenger they were fair performances. He simply lost to better players, especially on clay.
He might have beaten both of those players on clay courts where he plays his best tennis but he’s certainly capable on this surface. Miami should feel good for him and he’s advanced past the first round here before. It was in 2019 and he actually took Borna Coric to three sets as well.
He played plenty of matches so far this year but holds only a 3-8 record. He had some solid outings earlier in the year but his form didn’t improve much on clay courts where he lost a couple of winnable matches.
It’s a matchup that has been good to him and the only hard court match they ever played happened earlier this year and Baena won it.

Zapata Looking To Get Back To Winning
It’s been a while since Zapata won a tennis match as his last victory came at the Rio Open which was on February 24th. Since then he only played one match and it was last week in Indian Wells where he lost to Ugo Humbert who is a far better hard court player than him.
It wasn’t a shocking defeat as Zapata really doesn’t play that well on hard with his record on the surface this year 0-4. He’ll probably win a few matches here and there and this might be one of them but he’ll need to really find a good rhythm.
Everything in his game is tailored to clay courts and switching to playing on hard will always be hard for him. The record overall is 7-7 but all of those win came on clay courts which is where he plays his best tennis.
It’s a winnable match for him but he’s had a lot of trouble with this compatriot in the past and I expect that to continue here.
Carballes Baena v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip
So I expect Baena to win this matchup but I do think Miralles can make it a match. Any combination of over should be decent value as well as Baena to win but that’s a risky play.
