Mayar Sherif v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

Siegemund leads 1-0, beating Sherif in the 2020 Prague Open in three sets.

Sherif 4-7 in 2023

Mayar Sherif, current World No. 52, has had a slow start to the 2023 season. That may change when the clay swing starts, considering that the Egyptian has a preference for the dirt track over other surfaces.

Case in point, she was 30-17 last season, of which, 26-5 came on clay courts while the remaining 1-12 was on the hard track. She also picked up four trophies – all on clay.

Sherif’s best run of the 2023 tour came in Monterrey, where she was a quarterfinalist. Most recently, she played in Indian Wells but ended up losing to the Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in three sets.

The 26-year-old Mayar is not the most consistent performer on hard courts, and this gives Siegemund a strong opening.

Siegemund Starts as a Qualifier

Laura Siegemund, current World No. 114, is starting in Miami as a qualifier. Her path to the main draw saw her beat Diana Shnaider and Eva Lys in straight sets.

The 35-year-old German, who may possibly be competing in her last season, did win the doubles title here with Vera Zvonareva last season. In fact, along with Beatriz Haddad Maia, she was the runner-up in Indian Wells just last week – losing to the pairing of Krejcikova-Siniakova.

There is definitely some fight left in Siegemund, and her massive experience stretching across three decades makes her a formidable opponent. She is 9-8 in 2023, with her third-round showing in the Aus Open being her sole highlight.

Sherif v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Sherif may have the benefit of youth, but her lack of form and experience makes her an underdog for this match. Siegemund has got a good chance here to start strong and take advantage of her opponent’s sloppy play. That said, Laura may very well be tested here, but ultimately, she should come out on top.
