Xinyu Wang v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head
They have faced off once before this in the qualifying rounds of the 2022 WTA Berlin and Wang had won it in three sets.

A quarterfinal at the Hobart International, a semifinal appearance at the Hua Hin Open and Wang then made it as far as the third round in Indian Wells two weeks ago.
That performance in Indian Wells was Wang’s best showing at any tournament of a level of WTA 1000 or higher, having never made beyond the second round in such competitions or at Grand Slams.
And it wasn’t like it was a couple of easy wins or a luck of draw either that helped the world number 61 at Indian Wells. She needed to get past Elise Mertens in the first round before sending out the seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Adding to the sparkle was the fact both were straight-set wins as well.
What Wang will now hope for is continue with that run and surpass her previous year’s showing in Miami when she had been dispatched in her opener.

Friedsam Surprises Yastremska in Qualifiers
After starting out the season in the Australian Open qualifiers and losing there and then in the Lyon Open qualifiers, Friedsam seems to have settled down in a much better routine in more recent times.
At the Linz Open, for instance, Friedsam came through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw and from there she won successive matches to enter the quarterfinals.
She did the same in Austin, winning a couple of rounds to make it to the last eight. There, much like in the qualifiers here in Miami, Friedsam had defeated Yastremska again.
Which is why while she would be disappointed at not qualifying for the main draw of the Indian Wells Open, back to back wins in the qualifiers have put her through. The former world number 45 has never won a main draw match here before this – can she turn that around?
