Cori Gauff v Rebecca Marino Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the French Open last season and Gauff had carved out a 7-5, 6-0 win.

Other than her early exit at the WTA Doha, Gauff has had a good set of performances going her way this season. She had started off with a title win in Auckland, made the fourth round at the Australian Open while more recently she was a losing quarterfinalist at the Indian Wells Open.
What might just bother Gauff a little is while she has not wasted too much disposing off players of lower quality, she has struggled a tad against some of the other, high-ranked ones.
Her four losses for the season have come against Jelena Ostapenko, Veronika Kudermetova, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka – an indicator of we were talking about earlier.
It’s a step-up that Gauff will hope to take and move deeper into this tournament but for now, based on the aforementioned data, she shouldn’t worry too much about her second round opponent.

Marino Blitzes Past Putintseva
There haven’t been too many tournaments this season where Marino has managed to get past her first round opponent. In fact before coming into this competition there were just two occasions – in Auckland and Monterrey – that she had done that.
Which is also why Marino started off a second favourite against Yulia Putintseva in the first round here in Miami. And yet, in a matter of a mere hour and 22 minutes, Marino managed to carve out a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over her Kazakh opponent.
Slamming 10 aces and winning 81% of her first serve points, Marino broke her opponent twice in the match – both in the second set. Aided no doubt by her returning game, Marino earned 10 break-points in the encounter.
Marino will now have a rather difficult task of taking the attack to Gauff but does she have the artillery to test her American opponent out?

Gauff is a huge favourite here and rightly so given her record against the lower-ranked players. Expect her to run away with the encounter.
