Tommy Paul v Marc-Andrea Huesler Head to Head

While they have never faced off in any of the top-level ATP matches, they did play each other at the Fairfield Challenger in 2018 and Paul had won that qualifying round encounter.

Paul Coming off Successive Solid Showings

Having made it to the semifinal at the Australian Open earlier this year, Paul had continued his good form at the Acapulco Open were the American reached the final. He was stopped in his tracks in the title-decider by Alex de Minaur.

Paul followed that up with a fourth round appearance at the Indian Wells Open with wins over Jan-Lennard Struff and Hubert Hurkacz. He had actually gone into the Hurkacz encounter at 11/10 odds to win it, and was down a set too.

The American managed to turn things around to win in three before falling just short of a quarterfinal berth when he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in a third set tie-breaker.

Now coming up against his Swiss opponent here who has also touched his career-best ranking,, Paul will hope he can shun any complacency away.

Huesler 6-8 on Win-Loss after Grinding Win against Ramos-Vinolas

While Huesler has hit a career-best ranking of 47th on the ATP charts, it must be quickly said he has had a struggling year so far. Before coming into this tournament, the Swiss player had won just five of the 13 matches he had been a part of and that’s also why he wasn’t an overwhelming favourite in his opener.

Taking on the experienced but clay-court specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas, the 4/6 favourite Huesler needed three sets and two tie-breakers to get past his opponent.

Huesler won 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3 in two hours and 38 minutes to squeak through to round two. This was his first ever main draw win in this competition.

Slamming 10 aces, Huesler wasn’t broken in the opening set but fell in the ensuing tie-breaker, but more vitally he came back from 3-5 down in the second set to win the tie-breaker.

In the decider, Huesler found his rhythm again, breaking his opponent three times to seal his second round berth.

Paul v Huesler Prediction and Tip

Paul shouldn’t have a lot of worries here as he looks to tie his place in the third round for the second season in a row.
