The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the two 24 year olds.

Cerundulo Reached Semi-Finals Last Year

Cerundulo enjoyed a debut in Miami last year to remember, beating a string of seeded players en route to the semi-final before his run was finally ended by Casper Ruud. In the process he became the lowest ranked semi-finalist in the history of the tournament, and the youngest for a decade.

What was even more surprising about that performance is that Cerundulo is primarily a clay court player, as he showed a few months later by winning his first senior title in Sweden.

There have been few signs so far in 2023 that he is capable of repeating his heroics in Florida this time, although he did reach the third round of the Australian Open, and he was a quarter-finalist on home soil in Buenos Aires.

The recipient of a first round bye in Indian Wells, like here in Miami, he first beat the American Jack Sock there in three sets, before he fell to a straight sets defeat to Felix Augur-Aliassime.

Kovacevic Maximises Good Fortune

By rights, Kovacevic should have packed his bags and left Miami by now, having been beaten in the second round of qualifying by the Australian Aleksandar Vukic.

However, he earned an unexpected route into the main draw as a Lucky Loser, and took full advantage by ousting the world number 66, Jaume Munar of Spain.

The first set was dominated by serve to the extent that neither man could create a break point. However, the odd dropped serve in three enabled Kovacevic to win the subsequent tie-break.

The American, though dropped his serve at the start of the second set, and, when he was broken again, it looked like the Spaniard was in the ascendancy.

Unfortunately for Munar, his form then deserted him. Almost in the blink of an eye he found himself five games down in the third set, and Kovacevic, who had not won a match on the main tour all year prior to that, was soon celebrating victory.

Cerundulo v Kovacevic Prediction and Tip

Whilst Kovacevic has nothing to lose, he may have used up his share of good fortune this week, whilst Cerendulo will be keen to prove that his performance in Miami last year was no flash in the pan.
