Despite going into his second round encounter as a 3/10 favourite, Khachanov did not play like one and was stretched to three sets by Tomas Etcheverry.
The Russian looked to be racing to an easy win when he took a mere 32 minutes to win the opening set but then fell apart in the second. It was only an early break in the third set that allowed Khachanov some respite as he went on to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in over two hours.
This follows a third round exit at the Indian Wells Masters two weeks ago and a first round ouster in Dubai for the inconsistent world number 16.
A former winner of a Masters 1000 tournament, Khachanov had earlier made the semifinals of the Australian Open but hasn’t quite managed to carry that form forward.

Lehecka Continues to Roll
The rise of Lehecka this season has been well-documented. He has been the man to beat and has risen from 81st on the world ranking to a career-best of 37th.
He is 44th now following a second round loss at the Indian Wells Open but take nothing from the Czech player who has already beaten some of the top players in the world this year.
And now while Lorenzo Musetti isn’t a top player, he was ranked 21st coming into the tournament and Lehecka would be glad to have made short work of him in his second round match. He won 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the third round, with the match lasting an hour and 20 minutes.
Lehecka faced only one break-point in the match and saved it while overcoming his opponent’s serve once in each of the two sets. A first serve percentage of 76% made for excellent reading for the Czech player too but more vitally he won 68% of his second serve points.
Can he now usurp his 16th-ranked opponent to add another top-20 scalp to his list this season?

While Khachanov is 3/4 to win this, we wouldn’t put it beyond Lehecka to get past his opponent in this match. Might see a three-setter too.
