Alexandrova Knocks Out Bencic

No. 18 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova dumped out ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday.

The world no. 18 Russian saved two set points on her serve at 5-4 in the first set and then two more in the ensuing tiebreak before edging out the Swiss to take the opener.

In the second set, Alexandrova got an early break as she built a 3-0 lead. She protected the advantage till the end to seal the contest 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.

The win means Alexandrova is now tied with Bencic at 3-3 in the head to head rivalry.

Alexandrova had begun her campaign with a three-set win over Taylor Townsend in the second round. This is the first time that the 28-year-old has reached this far in Miami. Her previous best was a third round finish in 2021. Can she reach a first quarterfinal? If she does, it will also be her first of the season.

Alexandrova, who won two titles last year, had come to Miami with a dismal 4-5 record in 2023.

Andreescu Eases Past Kenin

2021 finalist Bianca Andreescu is into the fourth round in Miami for the third time in three tries.

She had lost in the Round of 16 on her debut in 2019 and finished runner-up to Ashleigh Barty in 2021. Playing for the third time in the tournament this year, Andreescu has looked in excellent touch.

The 22-year-old started off her campaign with a three-set win over Emma Raducanu and then rallied from a set down to beat seventh seed Maria Sakkari in round of 2.

On Sunday, the Canadian world no. 31 scored her first straight sets win of the tournament, beating Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-4.

Andreescu couldn’t save the only break point that she faced but she converted all three of the breaking chances that she held. The one hour and 34 minute contest saw Andreescu dominate for most parts. The world no. 164 got her first break in the second set, once Andreescu had gone a double break up and led 4-1. Kenin threatened, but Andreescu made sure she protected the other break to seal the contest.

Andreescu improved her 2023 record to 9-6 following the win on Sunday. Her best so far this year is a semifinal finish in Hua Hin.

Alexandrova v Andreescu Prediction and Tip

Andreescu tends to do well in Miami. She has also displayed better form than the Russian this season and therefore she may topple Alexandrova for a place in the last eight.
