Kvitova Dumps Out Vekic

Petra Kvitova knocked out Donna Vekic on Sunday to move into the round of 16 in Miami for the sixth time in her career.

The Czech player, who was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells, is aiming to reach the last eight for the fourth time in Miami. She was a quarterfinalist in 2014, 2019 and 2022, but has never gone beyond that stage.

An eight-time WTA 1000 champion, Kvitova had begun her Miami Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing of Linda Nosková in the second round.

The lefty then accounted for Vekic in round 3 on Sunday. The world no. 12 served 8 aces, converted all three of the break points she held and failed to save either of the two break points that she faced during her 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

The first set saw Kvitova break in the vey first game and then she held on to the lead to take a one-set-to-love lead. In the second set, Vekic came back from a break down twice, but Kvitova dominated the tiebreak to end the 22nd seed’s run in the tournament.

With the two wins in Miami, Kvitova is now 13-5 in 2023. She has featured in two quarterfinals so far. Can she reach a third in 2023 with a win on Monday?

Gracheva Breezes Past Frech

At Indian Wells, she reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. A few days later she is into the round of 16 of a second WTA 1000 tournament.

Varvara Gracheva thrashed Magdalena Fręch in straight sets on Sunday to book a place in the round of 16.

The Russian, ranked no. 54th in the world, is in terrific form at the moment and Sunday’s win means she improved her season record to 21-10 across levels. Just before Indian Wels she had reached her maiden WTA final in Austin, only to finish runner-up to Marta Kostyuk.

Gracheva then went from qualifiers to the last 16 in Indian Wells and has done the same in Miami. What’s more she has not dropped a set in her last five matches. Gracheva ousted Réka Luca Jani and Peyton Stearns in the two qualifying rounds and then ousted Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska in the first round. Her biggest win came in the second round when she shocked Ons Jabeur with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The 22-year-old continued the winning momentum in the third round, demolishing Frech 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and 10 minutes. Gracheva won 81% points on her first serve and broke the world no. 105 five times in the match.

Can she cause another upset on Monday?

Kvitova v Gracheva Prediction and Tip
