Hugo Gaston has largely played his best tennis on clay courts as his game works best there. He has a mean drop shot which he uses often but he also generally lacks power in his game which makes him an odd fit on those types of courts.
He’s been okay this year, somewhat better than last year which wasn’t that good overall. The score is 12-8 with 10 of those wins coming on clay. He’s never played in Marrakech before so it will be a new experience for him but he does play a lot of time on clay.
That familiarity with the surface will certainly help him against Struff who is more inclined to faster courts but he’s not unfamiliar with clay. Another thing benefitting him is that they never played before as Gaston has an interesting style that is not very common on the Tour.
If he can play well and hit his drop shots he’ll have a decent shot here because Struff is not quick enough to rush to the net all the time.

Struff Returns to Clay
Struff is a player who loves to play serve and volley and one would think that clay doesn’t work that well for him but it actually does. The German is really good on clay and has been for many years. He’s given quite a few clay specialists some trouble over the years with a 13-3 record on the surface last year as well.
A lot comes down to his ability to play deep shots which leaves players in weird positions on the court allowing him to come forward and finish off the points. The key for him against Gaston will be the serve because he can really push him wide with it if he hits it well.
He can also overwhelm him with his groundstrokes because Gaston doesn’t have the power to match him but the drop shots will be a major issue if the French player can hit them. Struff is quite tall and not that quick around the court so he’ll need to be prepared for that.
Overall I do think the match is on his racquet as he has been very solid so far with a 22-8 record this year. He also played in the quarter-final here in the past.

For the most part, I think they are mostly even in terms of talent but Struff has been playing far better this year. He’s a bit more stable overall so I’d pick him to win the match. The over is another solid option.
